Fig, Goat Cheese & Thyme Shortbreads

In breakfast, cookie, fruit, nuts on December 16, 2010 at 16:20

Week 42 | 12.16.2010

Wow, what an incredible outcome. This is an involved, multi-step pastry but much of it can be prepared in steps ahead of time. Figgy jam poached in wine and spices, sweetened goat cheese layer, herb-citrus shortbread and a nutty crumble topping. Too much? You might think so until taking a bite, and then another, and perhaps a tiny slice more.

Upside-down Persimmon Sour Cream Cake

In breakfast, cake, fruit on December 1, 2010 at 00:37

Week 40 | 12.1.2010

December 1st. Welcome back from a festive break! I’m re-energized to test out a “stack” of new recipes after a couple of weeks off.

I’ve been eating persimmons nonstop since they first popped-up in the market a few weeks back. I can’t seem to get enough of the pumpkin-apple, caramel-sweetness of this gorgeous fruit. The Fuyu kind mind you. Hachiya’s are delicious but almost too¬† *gasp*, too sweet for me. I also like the clean crunch of Fuyu’s A proper fall fruit.

Buckwheat Scones & Fig Jam

In breakfast, fruit on October 27, 2010 at 11:21

Week 36 | 10.27.2010

I just made a batch of fig jam and it is delicious. It’s almost too good to use in something more elaborate than over toasted levain, or eaten by the spoonful. This jam is ideal, made with poached dried figs (rather than scullying up perfectly delicious fresh ones) and finished with a few knobs of salty butter.

I came across this recipe for this hearty fig and buckwheat scone a long while back. Finally my pantry is stocked, the weather is right, and I’m in the mood to bake up a few batches for you to enjoy. Read the rest of this entry »

Almond Poppyseed Teacake

In breakfast, cake, fruit, nuts on October 12, 2010 at 12:48

Week 34 | 10.12.2010
It WAS cold, a few days ago when I thought of this treat. Cold enough to dream about a cup of tea warming my hands at any hour of the day. Tea with a teacake… at least that was the plan. Today it’s hot hot hot. I had the fan rumbling at 6:30 this morning, not a baking mood. But maybe you can persuade me.

Summer in October eh? and Fall in July? Read the rest of this entry »

Walnut Teacakes

In breakfast, cake, nuts on September 8, 2010 at 11:48

Week 30 | 9.8.2010

Truly, I am back – after a nice long weekend, during which I took a beautiful hike with friends, enjoyed delicious cheeses made in our very own neighborhoods, and discovered a new gem in an ice cream shop. I wish we had more occasions for these adventures.

But for now, I must remember that I have a post to write and teacakes to bake! Walnuts in their shell is one of my favorite snacks, and activity. There is some sort of great satisfaction in banging away at some nut shells for an afternoon pick-me-up – tastier than shelled nuts to be sure. I just finished making another ice cream batch (finished eating it as well, sadly), which means that I have eggwhites aplenty.

Hazelnut, Chocolate & Espresso Biscotti

In breakfast, chocolate, coffee, cookie, nuts on August 3, 2010 at 06:35

Week 25 | 8.2.2010

A few weeks ago I woke up to a muffin and coffee breakfast that my friend had generously brought over to me. Sweet I know! The muffin was wonderfully memorable, chock full of hazelnut bits, small chunks of dark chocolate, and a smattering of coffee grounds. It was fragrant, hearty and sensational with every bite.

Upside-down Plum Cake & Chocolate Crust

In breakfast, cake, chocolate, fruit on July 27, 2010 at 07:45

Week 24 | 7.26.2010

For the past week on the way to the kitchen I’ve been walking past a basket of small plums that my mother brought over from a neighbor’s garden. I’ve been steadily turning the small mountain into a hill but there are still enough left for a moist plum & buttermilk cake. With a small disk of cocoa pastry crust held on with a dab of homemade caramel, this is a worthy breakfast, afternoon bite, or after-dinner treat.

Hazelnut & Carrot Cake

In breakfast, cake, nuts on July 7, 2010 at 08:20

Week 21 | 7.5.2010

Wow, it’s already mid-week and the beginning of July!

Certain foods are dear to me because of how I was introduced to them. From my dad, who is perpetually curious, I first hazarded a sample of sashimi in Hawaii as a child, and over the years we have in turn taken tastes of exotic Asian snacks such as puffy basil seed or fermented rice wine dessert drinks. From my mom I have discovered that root beer floats are best made with scoops of strawberry and vanilla gelato, or that a piece of white toast with butter and sugar is a deceptively simple treat.

Candied Lemon Oat Scones

In breakfast on March 1, 2010 at 19:29

Week 3 | 3.4.2010

The lemon zest has been candied and this week’s treats are in the works. I noticed these organic lemons from (Twin Girls Farm) at the market for only slightly more than regular ones. Zest, candy, lemons…organic is a good way to go this time around. Lemon zest on the left, cocktail grapefruit on the right.
