Strawberry & Vanilla Tart

Week 32 | 9.27.2010

Fresh fruit, I know how delicious it can be but this weekend I was reminded by just how sweet and perfectly satisfying a ripe fig or juicy peach is. Sad, no more figs or peaches, but there are little baskets of lipstick red strawberries in the market that I simply can’t ignore.

Looking forward to making a little tart of vanilla cream and these berries later in the week.

Week 32 | 9.22.2010


I’ve been spending much too much time thinking about homemade graham crackers in the past few days. My dear friend, who can apparently read my mind & mood, invited me to come along to a fire-pit s’more eating event last night. A delicious, toasty & bright evening of meeting new friends and smelling of campfire (and making my pillow smell of campfire…). All this to say I’ve been inspired by meringue, chocolate and a sticky-sweet child’s dessert.

Inside-Out Chocolate Chunk Cookies

I get pretty excited every time I have a new bottle of fresh milk in the fridge, waiting to be opened. Before taking on funky smells and fridge flavors, before getting crusty at the carton lip, milk…the VERY first sip is perfectly sweet and delicious.

Walnut Teacakes

Week 30 | 9.8.2010

Truly, I am back – after a nice long weekend, during which I took a beautiful hike with friends, enjoyed delicious cheeses made in our very own neighborhoods, and discovered a new gem in an ice cream shop. I wish we had more occasions for these adventures.

But for now, I must remember that I have a post to write and teacakes to bake! Walnuts in their shell is one of my favorite snacks, and activity. There is some sort of great satisfaction in banging away at some nut shells for an afternoon pick-me-up – tastier than shelled nuts to be sure. I just finished making another ice cream batch (finished eating it as well, sadly), which means that I have eggwhites aplenty.

…aaaaand we’re back!

Week 29 | 9.1.2010

Oven is healed! although the thermostat may never be the same again. We’re taking it slow this week, like recovery after surgery.

Yesterday I baked a tray of ultra-decadent chocolate cookies and they transformed from tacky batter to crackly-moist, delicious morsels. Today I sterilized jars for jamming strawberries and I was reminded how hot glass can get without an oven mitt. All good signs. Read the rest of this entry »
