Upside-down Plum Cake & Chocolate Crust

Week 24 | 7.26.2010

For the past week on the way to the kitchen I’ve been walking past a basket of small plums that my mother brought over from a neighbor’s garden. I’ve been steadily turning the small mountain into a hill but there are still enough left for a moist plum & buttermilk cake. With a small disk of cocoa pastry crust held on with a dab of homemade caramel, this is a worthy breakfast, afternoon bite, or after-dinner treat.

Coconut-Chili & Chocolate Cookies

Week 23 | 7.19.2010

I’m back! The past week has been a jumble of exciting travels, unglamorous delays, and nonstop eating and food-related activities. But Bakery Bites has returned and with cookies in store for this week’s treat to boot.

Per request from a frequent visitor I’ve dished up some ‘chocolate and spice’ in the form of coconut & chili butter cookies to be filled with whipped dark chocolate ganache. Chocolate & spice, with a bit of coconut tucked in between.

Hazelnut & Carrot Cake

Week 21 | 7.5.2010

Wow, it’s already mid-week and the beginning of July!

Certain foods are dear to me because of how I was introduced to them. From my dad, who is perpetually curious, I first hazarded a sample of sashimi in Hawaii as a child, and over the years we have in turn taken tastes of exotic Asian snacks such as puffy basil seed or fermented rice wine dessert drinks. From my mom I have discovered that root beer floats are best made with scoops of strawberry and vanilla gelato, or that a piece of white toast with butter and sugar is a deceptively simple treat.
